Aniane ( Occitan Aniana ) is a French commune with 2931 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hérault department in the Occitanie region ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Lodève and the canton of Gignac . The place is located at the exit of the Hérault gorge (Gorges de l'Hérault) about 35 kilometers northwest of Montpellier .

history

Aniane goes back to the monastery of the same name, founded by Benedict von Aniane at the end of the 8th century. The abbey was completely destroyed in 1562. In 1845 a prison was built on the site. The monastery church of St-Sauveur itself was built in the 17th and 18th centuries. Rebuilt in the 19th century and is now a parish church.
