The Mandach Church is the Reformed village church in the Aargau community of Mandach in Switzerland .

history

The first church was probably built in the second half of the 11th century by order of the Säckingen women's monastery and was built in the Romanesque style. In the 14th century, when the Habsburgs pledged Mandach to the Wessenbergers , the church also came into their care. After the village fire of 1518, the church was rebuilt and repairs to the building have been handed down from 1595 and 1667. In the years 1732 and 1733 the church was completely renovated and expanded due to its dilapidation. Since Mandach was also impoverished at that time, the Bern government supported the renovation of the church with 600 guilders . During the renovation in 1773, the current plaster ceiling was pulled in. Further renovations are known from the years 1848 and 1878. The tower clock and bell technology were renewed in 1910 and the clock from then is still in use today. In 1921 the church was electrified and six ceiling lights were installed. There was also an exterior renovation. After an interior renovation in 1933, an electric heater was installed in 1939. Just three years later, in 1942, the two bells had to be replaced due to cracks and the ringing was supplemented by a third bell at the same time. In order to be able to install an organ in the gallery , it was lowered in 1958, but three years later the subsoil was found to have subsided, so that a total renovation of the church was necessary. The last major renovation took place in 2010.

Furnishing

On the north side of the church there is a fresco that must have been created between the village fire of 1518 and the Reformation of 1528. At the beginning of the 17th century it was painted over, fell into oblivion and was rediscovered during the renovation in 1962. You can see Jesus praying in the garden of Gethsemane . With him the sleeping disciples Peter, John and James are represented. In the left background the soldiers of the temple guard can be seen with Judas, who come to take Jesus prisoner.
In the choir there is a glass window made in 1982 by Fritz Strebel. It shows Jesus with his disciples at the last supper .
