The interior of the church

The reformed church Wettingen is the church of the Evangelical Reformed parish Wettingen - Neuenhof . It was built in 1939.

prehistory

After a brief interlude Reformation that by the second Kappel War took place in 1531 an end to Wettingen was a Catholic church. Only with the establishment of the teachers' seminar in 1847 in the former monastery and the industrialization did the Reformed population return to Wettingen. The services initially took place in the seminary until the Reformed Church Cooperative Wettingen-Neuenhof, founded in 1877, received the right from the canton to celebrate services in the monastery church in the same year. In 1920, with the approval of the Grand Council, the church cooperative became a parish, which bought land in 1926 and built the first rectory on it. The piece of land was near the train station and the area was largely undeveloped at the time.

The church

The construction phase

The reformed church in Wettingen was built in 1939 on the land bought by the parish in 1925. First, a project was put out to tender that was won by the Zurich architect Walter Henauer . Due to the outbreak of the Second World War , the church tower could not be completed in its projected height, contrary to what had been planned, as the building material was required to fortify the Limmat position . The planned construction cost of 220,000 francs could only be raised through the commitment of the Reformation collections in 1940 and subsidies from the federal government, canton and municipality.

The church building

The church tower, which was originally supposed to be 18 meters high, is 14 meters high. Inside, the church is very sober and bright. Originally it had 500 permanent seats in the ship and on the gallery. Since the interior renovation in the early 1980s, it has a total of 340 seats, 120 of which are on the gallery. The benches were exchanged for chairs.

The bells

The bell for the Reformed Church, which consists of five bells, was cast by the Rüetschi bell foundry in Aarau. They were previously exhibited at Landi 1939 , but were already cast for the church. The bell lift took place on November 11, 1939. The five bells are tuned to the notes h ° –d' – e'– f sharp 'and a'.

art

Since the turn of the year 1940/41 there has been a stained glass window in the choir which shows the baptism of Jesus by Johannes and was created by the French-speaking artist Marcel Poncet . Since the original pulpit motto was painted over during the renovation in 1982, the parish decided to decorate the wall with the relief "Daniel in the lion's den" by Heinz Eith, which shows Daniel surrounded by three lions and supplemented by four triangular rays.
