prehistory

There were Reformed people in Freiamt as early as the Reformation . In 1529 nine municipalities with free offices converted to the Reformation, including Boswil and Bünzen. After the defeat of the people of Zurich against the Central Swiss in the Battle of Kappel and the conditions of the peace treaty after the Second Kappel War in 1531, they had to return to the old faith. In the next three hundred years there were no more Reformed people in Freiamt. With industrialization in the 19th century and the abolition of the Muri monastery in 1841, a small Reformed diaspora arose, which first had to travel to the canton of Zurich to attend church services . The first Reformed service took place in the nursing home Muri in 1887, but it burned down in 1889. In 1894 150 Reformed people founded the “Reformed Cooperative Muri and Surroundings”, which over the years got more and more members and in 1938 was able to elect its first pastor. Before the church was built in 1955, the parish celebrated its services in the chanting hall of the district school. Since this situation was unsatisfactory for the growing congregation, money was collected in a church building fund as early as the mid-1930s . In 1960 the cooperative received the right to collect church taxes and since 1961 it has been organized as a parish.

Building the church

The idea of building their own church was given impetus by the prospect of a free building site from the councilor and entrepreneur Otto Wild. The church building fund was so full that the architecture firm Dubach and Gloor from Bern could build the church in 1954 and 1955. The inauguration took place on October 2, 1955. The money for the purchase and construction of the organ, which was inaugurated in 1967, was collected through a large bazaar. In 1978/79 the church underwent an exterior renovation and in 1993 an interior renovation.

Choir room

In the choir there is a choir wall designed in 1994 by the Lucerne painter Irma Ineichen-Meier, which depicts the four elements associated with the symbols of the four evangelists. The Lord's Supper table, the lectern and two chairs come from the Murian architect Benni Frey and were designed in 1993. The baptismal bowl from 2007 comes from the wood sculptor Hansruedi Steiner from Aarau .
