Reformed Church Birrwil

The Reformed Church Birrwil is the Evangelical Reformed village church in the Aargau community of Birrwil in Switzerland .

history

The Birrwil church was first mentioned in a document in 1275. The church rate lay with the respective lords of Liebegg Castle , who held it until the end of the old Confederation . In the 14th century it was rebuilt in the Gothic style. The church tower, which was built on the south side, was rebuilt above the choir in the 16th century . With the exception of the northern longitudinal wall, the church was demolished in 1689 and Johann Friedrich von Breitenlandenberg built a new building north of it. The remaining north wall now formed the south side. Breitenlandenberg also left the tower standing, but he raised it. The church has been under cantonal protection since 1950. Extensive renovations were carried out in 1925 and 1975/78.

Buildings and equipment

Together with the rectory, the beneficiary barn and the beneficiary store, the church, located in the middle of the cemetery, forms a single assembly. The structure of the church, made of tuff stone masonry , is plastered white and has round-arched windows, over which a steep gable roof spans . A three-sided closed choir adjoins the nave , whereby there is no structural separation. The church tower is built onto the south side of the choir. Its ground floor was the choir of the old church. Due to the hillside location, the entrances are on the long sides.

Inside, the rococo- style stucco ceiling made in 1791 by a representative of the Moosbrugger dynasty is decorated with rocaille and garland motifs. The pulpit is on the eastern wall of the choir. The font consists of gray painted granite and is horizontally profiled. Of the coat of arms and cabinet disks, the two alliance disks from 1640 (Graviseth-Erlach-Prarom) and from 1689 (Breitenlandenberger-Hallwyl) are particularly noteworthy. They are located in the choir, are owned by the Canton of Aargau and have been under cantonal protection since 2003.
