Church of Uerkheim

The Reformed Church of Uerkheim is the village church of the Aargau community of Uerkheim in Switzerland .

history

In 1159 the Uerkheim church was first mentioned when Pope Hadrian IV placed it under the protection of the Muri monastery . Later the church set was owned by the Lords of Ifenthal, from 1395 by the Counts of Falkenstein and from 1458 by the city of Solothurn . After the introduction of the Reformation in 1528, the church set was exchanged for the city of Bern until it was taken over by the canton of Aargau in 1803. The structure of the church, which was originally dedicated to Holy New Year's Eve , goes back to the Romanesque period of the 12th century. The choir was added in 1520. In 1828 the gallery and today's roof were added.

Buildings and equipment

The church stands elevated above the confluence of the Dorfbach in the Uerke and faces northeast. The choir, closed on three sides and made of sandstone blocks, adjoins the rectangular nave . On the gable roof there is a ridge turret with a pointed helmet , which makes the building look more like a chapel.

What is remarkable about the choir is the one- bay reticulated vault . An Agnus Dei and a Bernese coat of arms are painted on the two keystones . Similar to the Bern Minster , completed in 1517, the spandrels of the vaulted fields are filled with flower and leaf ornaments. The coat of arms of Uerkheim is attached to the apex of the ogival choir opening.

The windows in the choir are decorated with stained glass donated by the Schönenwerd and Zofingen monasteries and the city of Bern. The Madonna on the crescent moon, Saints Leodegar , Vincent and Mauritius as well as the Bernese coat of arms are depicted . The two bells in the roof turret were cast by H. Rüetschi in Aarau in 1876 and 1939 .
