The Reformed Church Leutwil is the village church of the Aargau community of Leutwil in Switzerland .

history

The originally Romanesque church dates back to at least the 12th century. It was first mentioned in a document on July 2, 1273. At that time the church was consecrated to Saint Stephen until the parish joined the Reformation in 1528 . When the neighboring village of Dürrenäsch came from the parish of Kulm to the parish of Leutwil in 1614 , the nave was extended to the west in the two following years and a gallery was added. Between 1897 and 1899 the apse was demolished, the church was extended to the east, a choir was added and the church tower was built. The last renovation of the church was carried out in 2001.

Eduard Thurneysen was pastor here from 1913 to 1920 .

Furnishing

The church stands on a moraine spur sloping on three sides and presents itself as a long, narrow building under a continuous gable roof thanks to the two extensions made . The four-gabled church tower with a pointed helmet rises up on the south side . Inside, the nave connects seamlessly to the choir, which has been raised by two steps. During the interior renovation in 1937, frescoes from the 12th to 15th centuries that were valuable in art history came to light. These were moved to the north wall during the overall renovation from 1961 to 1963.

There are five bells in the bell cage of the church tower. The first three were raised after the church tower was built in 1897, and two more after the tower was rebuilt in 1963. The organ was installed in 1967.
