history

Archaeologically, the traces of the Johanneskapelle in Villigen can be traced back to the Romanesque period. It is first mentioned in a document in 1347. In the 16th century a church tower was added to the west side . The tower is now equipped with two bells, the older and larger of which dates from 1665. The smaller bell from 1856 was replaced in 1978 by a new bell of the same size due to a crack. In the 1960s, the tower was first renovated and then the nave was rebuilt so that the church could be inaugurated in January 1966. Another renovation was carried out in 1999. The church is now a listed building.
