Birr Church

The Reformed Church Birr is the Reformed village church in the Aargau municipality of Birr in Switzerland . It was built in 1662, but goes back to older predecessor buildings. This was first mentioned in a document in 1370 and became a reformed church when the Reformation was introduced in the city and republic of Bern .

history

The oldest church in Birr, built on the same site, dates back to around the year 1000. During archaeological investigations of the present church, which were carried out on the occasion of the renovation in 1972, indications of three previous buildings were found. The first church was about half as wide and half as long as the present one. A semicircular apse was added to this at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries. The church was then enlarged to double the length of the building, probably in the 14th century. It was mentioned for the first time in a document in 1370 and a church tower was added in the 16th century . The current church was built in 1662 by the builder Abraham Dünz , who also built the practically identical church in Gränichen .
