Reformed Church Rheinfelden

The Reformed Church Rheinfelden is the church of the Evangelical Reformed parish in the Aargau town of Rheinfelden in Switzerland . It stands southeast of the old town on Zürcherstrasse and was built in 1894/95 according to a design by the architect Johannes Vollmer .

history

The Fricktal , to which Rheinfelden belongs, was initially a closed Roman Catholic area. It was not until the mid-19th century that industrialization began that brought the first Reformed families to Rheinfelden, which initially organized themselves as the Rheinfelden church cooperative. The first Reformed service took place on August 13, 1854, in the Margaret Chapel of the former infirmary. As this turned out to be too small over time, the Reformed were also allowed to use the Christian Catholic town church of St. Martin from 1886 . The church cooperative organized an architectural competition in 1892 , which the Berlin architect Johannes Vollmer won (ahead of Emanuel La Roche and Karl Moser ). The brothers Gustav and Julius Kelterborn created the detailed plans and were responsible for carrying out the construction work in 1894/95.

In 1900 the church cooperative became a state-recognized parish, which also included the Protestants from Kaiseraugst , Magden and Olsberg . The architect Heinrich Liebetrau added a sign to the church in 1923 , and ten years later he added the choir . Between 1972 and 1974 the church was rebuilt and renovated. The choir was replaced by a new building, the basement of which contains classrooms. The original wooden barrel ceiling was also replaced and raised to make room for a new organ from Metzler Orgelbau on the gallery . In 2011, the architecture firm Daniel Studer ( Villnachern ) carried out a further renovation , in which, in addition to improving energy efficiency, the main focus was on renewing the technical equipment, improving the acoustics and adapting the church interior to contemporary forms of worship. For the first time, LEDs were used for lighting in a church in Switzerland .

Building

The church consists of a dominant steeple framed by toothed corner cuboids , to which a three-axle nave is attached. The tower is completed by an eight-sided pointed helmet , the bell comes from the Aarau bell foundry H. Rüetschi . A pediment triangle, which is decorated with a five-pass rosette, rises above the sign supported by columns. Inside this hall church there are glass paintings by Felix Hoffmann (1941/42) and Arnold Zahner.
