The Reformed Church Aarburg is the Reformed City Church in the Aargau municipality of Aarburg in Switzerland .

history

In the Middle Ages, a castle chapel dedicated to Saint George stood on the site of today's church . It had its own income and a Sigrist , but was administered from Zofingen by a chaplain . The chapel, first mentioned between 1360 and 1370, was elevated to a parish church in 1484 , whereupon an extension was made. From 1528 the church was reserved for the Reformed denomination. On May 4, 1840, a major fire reduced the town to rubble and ashes, and the church also burned down completely. In the years 1842 to 1845 a new building was built according to plans by Johann Jakob Heimlicher from Basel.

building

The church, built in neo-Gothic style, was built on the site of its predecessor and also included the area of the former cemetery. The building is elevated at the end of a rock spur, below the Aarburg fortress and above the old town at the narrow point of the Aare . It has pointed arched windows on its long sides with pilasters in between . On the west side there are two church towers, both of which are octagonal in the superstructure and have steep pointed roofs .

Below the church, the rectory built in 1726 leans against the rock spur. It is a baroque building with high rectangular windows and a protruding, heavily bent hipped roof . Until the city fire of 1840, the city gate led through its basement.

Bells

Today's new town church has two bells in each of its two twin towers. The largest and smallest are housed together in the right tower of the main facade, the two in the middle in the left. All bells were cast in Aarau and sound together in the so-called first inversion in major .
