Eduard Thurneysen (born July 10, 1888 in Walenstadt ; † August 21, 1974 in Basel ) was a Swiss Protestant theologian (pastor and professor in Basel). He was a representative of dialectical theology and a close friend of Karl Barth .

Life

Influenced by Christoph Blumhardt , Thurneysen began studying Protestant theology in Basel in 1907 (among others with Paul Wernle ), which he continued in Marburg and Zurich (among others with Hermann Kutter and Leonhard Ragaz ). During his studies he was assistant secretary of the CEVI in Zurich from 1911 to 1913 . In addition, he became a member of the Swiss Zofingerverein during this time . After graduating, he worked from 1913 to 1920 as a pastor in the Reformed parish of Leutwil in Aargau, where he came into close relationships with Karl Barth in the neighboring parish of Safenwil. From 1920 to 1927 Thurneysen then worked as a pastor in St. Gallen-Bruggen . In 1927 he was elected pastor by the Münster parish in Basel. Here he was also awarded a Dr. theol. PhD. In 1929 he became a private lecturer and in 1941 an associate professor for practical theology in Basel. Together with Karl Barth, he published the series Theological Existence today .

Thurneysen has made a name for itself especially in pastoral care . His approach to pastoral care can be seen as a consistent implementation of dialectical theology: Man can only be freed from his guilt-laden existence through the promise of God, which the pastor gives on his behalf. Human efforts must fundamentally fail. Logically, psychology must also subordinate itself to God's encouragement in pastoral care. It cannot set free, it is only understood as a tool ( auxiliary science ). It is the job of the pastor to lead his client to a point where all self- justification and self-endeavors cease ( legal righteousness ) and he lets God work ( righteousness from the gospel ). This approach has also met with widespread opposition. Nonetheless, his pastoral teaching - especially in conservative circles - is still recognized today.

In addition to pastoral care, his community-based interpretations of the New Testament books and his analysis of Dostoyevsky's literary work have had a broad impact.
