Paul Wernle

Paul Wernle (born May 1, 1872 in Hottingen , today Zurich ; † April 12, 1939 in Basel ) was a Swiss Protestant theologian specializing in the New Testament and church history .

Live and act

During his studies in Göttingen , Wernle became a member of the Schwarzburgbund - Association of Burschenschaft Germania in 1894 . In 1900 he became an associate professor and in 1905 a full professor at the University of Basel . He taught recent church history, the history of dogma and the history of the Protestant concept of teaching as well as the New Testament as a minor. Josef Hromádka was one of his students . and Eduard Thurneysen . In 1916 he was rector . At the end of the winter semester 1927/1928 he was retired due to illness.

In 1906, Wernle was one of the co-founders of the magazine Neue Wegen, along with Benedikt Hartmann , Rudolf Liechtenhan and Leonhard Ragaz . He was also friends with the reformed pastor and religious socialist Fredy Sutermeister .

1903 awarded him the University of Marburg the honorary doctorate . In 1923 he was elected a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . In 1925 the University of Basel awarded him an honorary doctorate.
