Strassenjungs (also called StrASsenjungs ) is a German rock band from Frankfurt am Main , which can be assigned to German rock , punk and new wave . In addition to their activity as a band, the members have also been running the Tritt Records label since 1979 .

history

The group was started in 1977 by the producer team Axel Klopprogge and Eckehard Ziedrich . Klopprogge and Ziedrich had followed the incipient popularity of punk rock and especially the Sex Pistols in England and wanted to start with a similar group in Germany. Since punk rock was still relatively unknown in Germany, they wrote aggressive songs with supposedly offensive lyrics. For the recording of the songs written mainly by Klopprogge and Ziedrich, such as B. Birgit O. , pop star , I need my booze (like the bourgeoisie the brothel) , at night on tour or jet-set fuckers , they hired the heads of the band Tiger B. Smith from Bad Camberg, which was dissolved in 1975 : Holger Schmidt on vocals and guitar and Karl Heinz Traut on drums and percussion, plus Nils Selzer (ex-The Cheats, ex-Orgon) on bass and Alexander B. Rodmann (ex-Lady, ex-Octopus) on guitar and vocals. The musicians appeared under pseudonyms: Schmidt became Karl Kraftlos, Rodmann became Alexander Adrett, Traut became Willi decency and Selzer became Mario Nett.

The debut album, Dauerlutscher , was recorded in 1977 in the Panne-Paulsen studio in Frankfurt-Heddernheim, which is better known for Krautrock . CBS (now Sony) was found as a contractual partner . However, when it was released, the album did not sell well. The single Birgit O. also flopped. A tour in the opening act of punk rock label colleagues The Clash brought respectable successes, but not the commercial breakthrough they had hoped for. Promotion campaigns such as the distribution of condoms in front of the Kant cinema in Berlin attracted attention, but little sales. It was not until years later that it would be commercially successful.

There was no management or booking agency for the band . For lack of further prospects, the street boys disbanded.

Bass player Nils Selzer then took over the naming rights from the previous production team and gathered new musicians around him. He now also took on the role of composer and lyricist and switched from bass to rhythm guitar. With Harry Heinen, who was found on a notice at the Goethe University in Frankfurt , on lead guitar and vocals, Volker "Pickup" Picard on bass and vocals and Martin Herbolzheimer on drums, Selzer recorded the self-produced album Wir ham in 1978 a party . The future HR3 DJ Jörg Bombach also played bass for a while. Through constant touring all over West Germany, the group gained a reputation as a good live band that had fan clubs. In addition, the street boys were politically active, for example at the Rock gegen Rechts festival in Frankfurt.

Selzer founded his own label Tritt Records , whose logo he took from a Freak Brothers comic. In terms of sales, Selzer was involved in snowball sales, including Embryo and Ton Steine Schherd , a self-distribution of the musicians, which later became Energie für alle (EfA).

Klopprogge then appeared in the early 1980s as composer, lyricist and producer of the Bad Camberg-born NDW star Markus (ex-Nylon udder) and the Austropop singer Wilfried . In 1985 Holger Schmidt and Axel Klopprogge collaborated again, when Klopprogge brought Schmidt to join the rock band Tokyo , which he produced, as a guitarist .

The next studio album, Go! was released in 1981. In autumn 1982, the previous debut album Permanlutscher was put on the index of the Federal Testing Office for writings harmful to young people because of its offensive lyrics . The indexing attracted public attention. In particular, the Federal Inspectorate took offense on the two pieces Night on tour and Ich need mein 'Suff (accusation of calling for a crime and excessive alcohol consumption). The indexing was lifted on August 31, 2007, because the federal inspection agency no longer considered the content of the album to be harmful to minors after the 25-year indexing period had expired.

In the spring of 1983 the live LP Live 83 was recorded. Selzer and Heinen also used the free time between their band engagements for solo albums. Selzer also produced the album for the Frankfurt women's band Stressaze , in which his girlfriend at the time also played, for the band's own Tritt Records label.

In 1984 Rockport Records (with EMI Electrola distribution) released the album Stay or Go , on which Matthias Baumgardt played lead guitar instead of Harry Heinen. A video clip was produced for the released single Hallo . The comparatively poppy album did not show the hoped-for success, so that the next studio album Sex was released again in 1986 on Selzer's label Tritt Records.

In 1990 Nils Selzer retired from the stage for health reasons and mainly worked in the studio, with Kevin Coyne , among others . Andi Mengler performed live as a singer in the future . With Michael Liebert on lead guitar, Torsten Dechert on drums and Volker “Pickup” Picard on bass, the group released the album Duell in 1991 and contributed a song to the soundtrack of the film Manta, Manta .

In 1992, with the then Eintracht Frankfurt coach, "Stepi" Stepanović, the stadium anthem Eintracht was recorded, which became a No. 1 hit on Radio FFH . In another soccer project, the band was in the video clip Wir sind die Fans together with Sepp Maier and ZDF presenter Heike Maurer and spoke out against violence in soccer stadiums. Andi Mengler also composed the stadium anthem Forever OFC for Eintracht arch-rivals Kickers Offenbach .

The former record company CBS Records (now Sony) released the debut album on CD for the first time in 1993, despite being indexed. The line-up changed again in 1996: Manni Masal replaced Michael Liebert as guitarist. René D. replaces Torsten Dechert as drummer.

In 1997 another studio album Tut gut was released . In 1999 Andi Mengler got out and left bassist Volker “Pickup” Picard the job of singer, so that the group performed live as a trio for the first time.

In 2003, the WDR- Rockpalast recorded a concert in the Cologne club "Underground" with Selzer on vocals again, who has been the frontman of the band again since then. In 2012, Selzer began producing the band story video DVD for the 35th anniversary, which was published in 2013 with the title permanent lollipop Report 1 .

Torsten Dechert replaced René D. as drummer. In 2015 Lutz Sommer replaced Mani Masal as guitarist, Micha Liebert replaced Lutz Sommer in 2016, and Mani Masal replaced Micha Liebert as guitarist in 2018. Georg Tautenhain replaced Torsten Dechert on drums.

On September 6, 2019, the street boys gave their farewell concert in the Batschkapp in Frankfurt after 42 years of band history.

The band still exists. In May 2020 she released the single "Arschlöcher" (digital) with her distribution partner Broken Silence. There was also a video clip on YouTube and Facebook.
