Theological Existence Today , Volume 1

Theological Existence Today was a series of publications published by Christian Kaiser Verlag in Munich from 1933 to 1941 . It was first published jointly by Karl Barth and Eduard Thurneysen , then by Eduard Thurneysen alone (from issue 47) and later by Karl Gerhard Steck (from issue 65).

Purpose and aim

In the first issue, which initially appeared in 1933 as “Supplement No. 2 of Between the Times ”, Karl Barth wrote:

"The decisive thing I am trying to say about these worries and problems today ... is simply that I try to continue here in Bonn with my students ... and as if nothing had happened - perhaps in a slightly exalted tone, but without direct reference - theology and only theology to practice. "

Eduard Thurneysen commented on the repeatedly breaking criticism in 1938:

"The title of our series of publications is occasionally used by all sorts of ill-willed and unreasonable people as an occasion for ridicule and slander, as if there was a contradiction between theological and Christian existence, and as if everything for us at least amounts to a mere intellectual theological existence not on the Christian existence to really live under our Lord. Such general allegations are easy to make and difficult to refute. Yet another judge is over us. But perhaps this scripture in its own way may also be a testimony to the fact that in our thinking and in life (and both are closely related) the obedience of faith is no less important than others. "
