The TVZ Theological Verlag Zurich AG is a reformed Swiss book and magazines publisher based in Zurich .

history

Today's company was entered in the commercial register on August 24, 1945; however, the publishing history begins as early as 1833, the year in which the Evangelical Society of the Canton of Zurich set up a youth library for apprentices in Zurich. This resulted in a Protestant bookstore in 1840. In 1934 the bookstore became a publishing house with the Zwingli-Verlag . The company was called Evangelische Buchhandlung & Zwingli-Verlag AG and later became a GmbH. At the same time, the Evangelischer Verlags Zollikon EVZ was founded in 1935 , which published Professor Karl Barth , who was dismissed in Bonn in the same year .

The Zwingli publishing house, which had already absorbed the theological publishing house Flamberg , and the EVZ merged into the TVZ in 1970. The planned expansion failed, however, and in 1976 new share capital had to be subscribed. Since then, the Evangelical Reformed Church of the Canton of Zurich has been the main owner.

Almost thirty years later, Pano Verlag came under the wing of the TVZ in 2003. The NZN Buchverlag was founded as early as 1946 to publish collections of articles and essays for the Catholic daily Neue Zürcher Nachrichten , which quickly developed into an internationally renowned art book publisher. In 1972 he came to the Roman Catholic Church of the Canton of Zurich, which he continued independently until 2005. Since then, his program has been continued as the Catholic “Edition NZN at TVZ” under the wing of the Protestant Theological Publishing House in Zurich. With the integration of “Edition NZN”, the publishing house set a strong ecumenical signal.

As early as 1972, the evangelical TVZ, together with the Catholic Benziger publishing house, published the ecumenically oriented religious education magazine “RL. Journal for Religion and Life Studies ». From 2008 the magazine was entitled “reli. Zeitschrift für Religionsunterricht »known, but had to be discontinued at the end of 2013 for economic reasons.

Publishing program

In addition to the complete edition of Karl Barth's works , the publisher also publishes the Zwingliana magazine and the magazine for religious instruction and life studies .

According to its own statements, the publishing house is the “Reformed publishing house with the longest tradition in Switzerland for theological and Christian literature of all educational levels.” The publishing house is known beyond national borders. In 2003, the TVZ took over Pano Verlag , which publishes works on cultural and religious studies, and in 2005, the NZN Buchverlag , which specializes in theology, pastoral care, law and history of the Catholic Church in Switzerland.

The focus of the publishing program is made up of four areas:

  • Theological science, church history, editions (classics such as Zwingli, Bullinger, Barth)
  • Books for Church Life
  • Christian literature for a general reading audience
  • Religious education (theory and practice).

TVZ Verlags AG not only publishes individual printed books, it also publishes digitally. The e-books are available in ePub format or as PDF.
