Ruedi Reich

Rudolf "Ruedi" Reich (born January 9, 1945 in Uster ; † August 12, 2012 in Zurich ) was a Swiss pastor and from 1993 to 2010 President of the Church Council of the Evangelical Reformed Church of the Canton of Zurich .

Live and act

Ruedi Reich grew up in Regensdorf , where his father had been director of the cantonal prison since 1948 , from the age of three . After completing secondary school, Reich trained as a teacher at the Küsnacht seminar and then studied theology . From 1972 to 1993 he was parish pastor in Marthalen . In 1973 he was elected to the Synod of the Canton of Zurich , where he was a member of the religious-social faction, and in 1983 to the Council of Churches. From 1993 on, he was the full-time president of the church council and head of the executive branch of the reformed regional church in Zurich. In addition, as President of the Church Council of Zurich, he was ex officio President of the Concordat of the German-Swiss Evangelical Reformed Churches for the training of pastors.

On September 9, 2001, Ruedi Reich demanded about the Wasterking witch trial : The events of 1701 are an injustice, which the Reformed Church in Zurich also has to face. Here people have sinned against the gospel because they have sinned against defenseless people.

In 2010, Ruedi Reich reached his retirement age at the age of 65. He had initially planned to resign at the end of the current term of office in September 2011, but he resigned from his position as Church Council President at the end of 2010 for health reasons due to a tumor on the spine. He died on August 12, 2012 at the age of 67 in Zurich. Ruedi Reich was married and the father of four children.

The Theological Faculty of the University of Zurich awarded him an honorary doctorate (Dr. theol. H. C.) In 2005 for his work as President of the Church Council . In 2008, the Zurich government council awarded him the silver medal of honor.
