geography

Only a few kilometers west of the center of Zurich and the airport, the community stretches across the Zurich Furttal. The valley forms a direct connection between the two strong economic regions in the Zurich North and Zurich West area.

The municipality of Regensdorf consists of three districts: Regensdorf, Adlikon and Watt. There is a kind of division of labor among them:

Regensdorf is the largest part of the municipality. This is where the shopping center, hotels, various shops and also the local government are at home. Regensdorf-Watt train station is also located on Regensdorfer Boden. There is not much left to see of the former farming village of Regensdorf. The rest of the old town center is near the reformed church.

Adlikon is particularly noticeable with the large Sonnhalde residential development. It was created by the real estate company Göhner and is therefore also called Göhnerswil . The settlement is one of the few award-winning settlements of the Swiss Werkbund. There is also an old rural and rural environment.

At its core, Watt is still a farming village.

The three districts have grown together structurally today. The well-developed road and bus network connects all districts and industrial areas with each other.

history

middle Ages

The origins of the modern settlements date back to the 6th century, during the time of the Alemannic conquest . The oldest surviving document, which mentions Regensdorf as Reganesdorf , dates from the year 870. The place name is formed from the Old High German male personal name Regin (in the possessive genitive Regines ) and the Old High German noun dorf ‹village, country estate› and thus means ‹village, estate des Regin ›.

An important role was played in the Middle Ages , the Barons of Regensberg , on a small moraine hills at today Weiler Altburg 11th-century castle. Their remains, the ruins of Alt-Regensberg (popularly Altburg after the hamlet) can still be visited today.

The lower jurisdiction in the Middle Ages was in Regensdorf and Watt with the rule of Alt-Regensberg, in Adlikon and in Oberdorf near Wettingen monastery . The Meierhof in Regensdorf formed its own judicial district from 1373 onwards, which was in the hands of Zurich citizens. By the 16th century, Watt, Adlikon and Regensdorf each developed their own community organizations. In Helvetic Republic , they were combined to form the political municipality of Regensdorf, with Watt and Adlikon remaining autonomous as separate civil parishes until 2009 .

From the 12th century onwards, there were two churches in Regensdorf that were close to each other, which is why two parts of the village have developed, the front village and the rear village.

History of the medieval churches

One church in Regensdorf was dedicated to St. Nicholas . This church was located in Nieder-Regensdorf and was a branch of Höngg . It is first mentioned as a chapel in 1280. The collature was transferred to Wettingen in 1359 from the knight Johannes von Sehein ( Seen ) . This chapel was looked after from Höngg for worship services, and since 1417 mass has been attended on Sundays and public holidays. In 1485 there was an effort to found a chaplaincy. In 1493 this church received parish rights. After the Reformation in 1524, the chapel was demoted to Schopf, but in 1956 it was restored and given back to church purposes.

The second chapel was that of Ober-Regensdorf, but its title is unknown. The collage was owned by von Landenberg -Greifensee, settled in Alt-Regensberg. With this fortress, the chapel also passed to Zurich. The priest of Höngg was the tithe recipient. In 1470/72 the church received the episcopal permission to celebrate mass on a portable altar. During the Reformation the chapel was converted into the rectory shed.

In 1529 Regensdorf became an independent Reformed parish. The former St. Nicholas Chapel was elevated to a parish church.

Younger story

The plain of the Furttal (today largely overbuilt), on the southern edge of which Regensdorf lies, was swampy reedland until the lowering of the Furtbach (from 1870) and was therefore only partially usable for agricultural purposes. Remnants of the marshland can still be found in the vicinity of the Katzensee, especially on the south side.

On the north side of the former reed, exposed to the south, are Watt and Adlikon. The drainage of the Furttal enabled agriculture and industry to develop it. The first factories soon followed the construction of the railway. A cantonal penal institution was also set up in Regensdorf, which gave the phrase “go to Regensdorf” a special aftertaste in the rest of the canton.

The history of the region is being researched by the HVF ( Furttal Local History Association ). The association works to preserve valuable objects and landscapes.

Regensdorf forms a political municipality . Mayor is Maximilian Walter (period 2018–2022). The municipal assembly forms the legislature and the municipal council (7 members) acts as the executive. The parish hall in Regensdorf was expanded in 2010/11 for the municipal administration.

Civil parishes

In the political community of Regensdorf, the two places Watt and Adlikon each formed their own civil parish from the 19th century to 2009 .

Civil parish of Adlikon: It maintained the corridors and operated its own water supply for the old part of Adlikon. The board of directors consisted of three members (president, estate manager and assessor). Every year three to four community assemblies take place - in contrast to the city, which has a parliament as a legislature.

Civil municipality Watt: This included the district Watt and the hamlet Altburg. The area totaled 588 hectares. As with Adlikon, the water supply was a central area of responsibility of the civil parish.

The civil parishes of Adlikon and Watt had to be abolished by the end of 2009 due to the new constitution of the canton of Zurich.

Churches

There are three churches in Regensdorf:

Economy and Infrastructure

Industry

Regensdorf has one of the largest industrial areas in the canton of Zurich. In total there are around 10,000 jobs in Regensdorf. The traffic-related advantages in the vicinity of the north bypass of the motorway in the city of Zurich and the airport have prompted many companies (including SAP , Mövenpick , Dachser and DHL ) to relocate their administration and, in some cases, production to the large industrial zone. Gericke AG was one of the first companies to set up shop in Regensdorf in 1957.

shopping mall

The Regensdorf shopping center is located together with the Mövenpick Hotel in the heart of Regensdorf. Public transport stops are in the immediate vicinity.

Public transport

Like all Zurich municipalities, Regensdorf is part of the Zurich Transport Association (ZVV). The Regensdorf-Watt station of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) is served every half hour by the S 6 Baden - Regensdorf-Watt - Zurich HB - Uetikon of the Zurich S-Bahn . The train station is also the hub of most of the bus routes in the Furttal, which are operated by the Glattal transport company (VBG). With the «4. Partial addition »to the Zurich S-Bahn, the new S 21 ( Regensdorf-Watt - Oerlikon - Zurich HB ) began operating in December 2015 in order to relieve the S6 during rush hour. As an alternative, a new S-Bahn route to develop the Science City ETH Hönggerberg via a tunnel station was proposed. Regensdorf is currently planning to create 6500 new residential and workplaces in the Bahnhof Nord development area by 2040. ETH Hönggerberg is also planning to expand the site by 45% in accordance with the master plan in 2040. In order to develop these two growth centers, the implementation of a first stage of the S-Bahn connection Regensdorf-ETH-Hönggerberg-Hardbrücke-Zurich HB in combination with subsequent further expansions for the holistic development of the Zurich university location was proposed. This would reduce the travel time from Zurich main station to the ETH Hönggerberg from today's 25 minutes to 6 minutes and the ETH Hönggerberg could be reached directly from the Regensdorf train station in 4 minutes.
