DHL is a German, in 1969 San Francisco by Adrian D Alsey , Larry H illblom and Robert L ynn established, parcel and letter-Express service , which as since 2002 DHL International GmbH to consolidated German Post DHL Group belongs. The name is an acronym made up of the first letters of the last names of the company founders. The company is owned by Deutsche Post as family brand in the business units Express , Global Forwarding, Freight and Supply Chain , as well as the products package and eCommerce out. DHL operates so-called packing stations for the collection and delivery of shipments .

history

Old DHL Worldwide Express logo

The founders brought shipping papers from ships by air from San Francisco to Honolulu . The customs clearance of the corresponding shiploads could thus begin before the ships actually arrived. The business idea, the accompanying documents before the actual transportation of goods to send, established the success of this express service.

In 2002 DHL Worldwide Express and with it DHL Aviation were taken over by Deutsche Post AG . After the takeover, the DHL Worldwide Express and Deutsche Post EuroExpress brands were merged into a common DHL Express brand. The originally wine-red logo on a white background of the former DHL Worldwide Express became the light red logo on a yellow background, with stronger italics and narrower stripes, in line with the corporate design of Deutsche Post. Deutsche Post's international business mail has been operating as DHL Globalmail since 2004, making it the fifth business area under the yellow and red DHL logo.

Under the name DHL Aviation , DHL continues to have a subsidiary based in Brussels , which provides the corresponding air transport capacities, and subsidiaries such as DHL Air UK in Great Britain or DHL Aero Expreso in South America. Furthermore, DHL maintains its own cargo airline, which was previously operated by DHL Worldwide Express and is based in Schkeuditz, under the name European Air Transport Leipzig .

In 2008, the European was air hub from Brussels Airport to Leipzig / Halle Airport shifted, making this the third global operating DHL hub next to Hong Kong International Airport in China and the Cincinnati airport in the United States of America was.

In the summer of 2008, DHL made headlines in the USA with the intention of ceding its loss-making air transport business in the USA to its competitor UPS with its subsidiary UPS Airlines . With this, DHL and its parent company , Deutsche Post AG , also entered the US presidential election campaign in 2008 . At least 10,000 jobs, especially in the state of Ohio , were on the verge.

In 2010, the cargo airline European Air Transport Leipzig , based in Schkeuditz, started operations. It handles the majority of the DHL cargo flights departing from Leipzig / Halle Airport, while the cargo airline AeroLogic, founded in 2009 together with Lufthansa Cargo , handles some of the long-haul flights.

In December 2013, DHL received increased media attention with the “Parcelcopter” project, in which the company tested the delivery of medicines with a remote-controlled aircraft. A parcel was flown over the Rhine from a pharmacy to the DHL headquarters in Bonn with a quadrocopter . It was a test flight, with no specific plans for use in regular parcel delivery. Between September and mid-December 2014 there was a longer test run of the parcel copter with almost 40 flights to the island of Juist , which was rated as successful by DHL.

The entire freight and express business of the "Deutsche Post DHL Group" is now operated under the brand name DHL . With the takeover of the British logistics service provider Exel in 2005, the company was restructured into these three areas:

  • DHL Express (courier and express services in the Asia-Pacific region, Europe, EEMEA, international express services in the USA)
  • DHL Global Forwarding / DHL Freight (air and ocean freight business, formerly DHL Danzas Air & Ocean ; land transport business)
  • DHL Supply Chain (business with logistics solutions for large customers - supply chain management , contract logistics , etc.)

DHL Paket GmbH (parcel services in Germany) and Global Mail (cross-border mail transport, mail services in domestic markets outside Germany) are organizationally part of the Post & Parcel Germany division .

DHL is now represented in Germany with 35 permanent branches, 20,000 branches and sales points, 4,500 (as of 2019) packing stations and 1,000 parcel boxes.

By September 2018, 27 countries had been integrated into the DHL Parcel Europe network , including Switzerland.

In June 2019, DHL Express Austria opened its largest Austrian parcel logistics center at Linz Airport in Hörsching . At the beginning of 2019 DHL announced its surprising withdrawal from Austria, as a result of which DHL Paket Austria and its properties were sold to Austrian Post , which has also been delivering DHL standard parcels in Austria since August 1, 2019.

Projects supported

DHL has been supporting Surf Life Saving Australia since 2003, and since 2006 the offices of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs ( OCHA ) with disaster response teams for the logistical handling of relief supplies in the destination airports. The partnership with the United Nations also includes the “Get Airports Ready for Disaster” (GARD) training program. It was launched together with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in 2009 and prepares airport staff and civil protection authorities for the logistical challenges posed by a disaster.

In the field of educational support, there has been a partnership with Teach For All and the SOS Children's Villages for several years .

Climate protection

By 2020, the CO 2 efficiency for our own transport services and that of subcontractors is to be improved by 30 percent compared to 2007. One measure for this is the use of electric vehicles for delivery. In December 2014, Deutsche Post took over the start-up company Streetscooter , which also manufactured small electric vehicles for DHL until 2020.

criticism

The ZDF magazine WISO reported in its broadcast on October 31, 2011 of wage dumping and unilaterally disadvantageous remuneration systems for the delivery person. Due to an inappropriately high workload, the deliverers are forced to work long hours of up to 14 hours a day. As is usual with other parcel services, DHL subcontracts part of its delivery (“service partners”). These in turn employ self-employed deliverers. In some large cities, such as Munich, this led to significant delivery failures at times; the parcels had to be picked up regularly by the recipients in the branches.

In 2011, the journalist Reinhard Schädler worked three weeks undercover for a NDR documentary as a parcel slave in the 45 Min series under a pseudonym for a service partner of DHL in Hamburg. The film massively criticizes the working conditions of the delivery staff. After the next edition 45 min: Still exploited - DHL parted ways with the subcontractor on March 31, 2012 for the corresponding districts in Hamburg.

Günter Wallraff denounced the working conditions at parcel services in 2014 in Die Loadträger .

In 2004 the parcel service was rated “satisfactory” in a test by Stiftung Warentest . The pricing and the cumbersome terms and conditions were criticized . The test was repeated in 2010 with the same result, but the term of the packages is said to have been shortened. In 2014, DHL was the test winner in the third repetition.

Sponsorship

DHL has been the official logistics partner of Formula 1 since 2004 . In addition, the company sponsors the DHL Fastest Lap Award , honoring the driver who sets the fastest lap time most frequently during the FIA World Championship . Previously, DHL was the main sponsor of the Jordan racing team and the 2011 Turkish Grand Prix between 2000 and 2002 .

From the 2011/12 season, the English football club Manchester United wore the DHL logo on their training clothing and received around 45 million euros for it by 2015. DHL is particularly active both nationally and internationally as a rugby sponsor . Since 2011 the company has been the main sponsor of the Stormers and other teams from Cape Town , and since 2014 as the main sponsor of the Harlequins from London . Furthermore, DHL is the official jersey sponsor of the rugby national teams of Germany and Canada , both in classic fifteen-a-side rugby and in Olympic seven-a-side rugby .
