The DPDgroup (formerly: Dynamic Parcel Distribution , previously Deutscher Paket Dienst ) is a group of international courier express parcel service providers under the umbrella of GeoPost, which belongs to the French La Poste and is based in Issy-les-Moulineaux . The companies of the group and the associated franchisees transport standard and express parcels nationally and internationally under the brands DPD , Chronopost , SEUR and BRT . The DPDgroup ships to over 230 countries worldwide and is, according to its own information, the largest parcel supplier in Europe.

history

In 1976 the DPD Deutscher Paketdienst was founded by eight German forwarding companies , including the Honold Logistik Gruppe (Neu-Ulm), Hellmann (Osnabrück), Zufall (Göttingen), Streck Transport (Lörrach), Cordes & Simon (Hagen), TTF ( Flensburg), Denkhaus (Koblenz), and Zeitfracht (Berlin). In the founding year alone, over 1.4 million parcels were transported in Germany, which increased to 2.5 million parcels a day by 2012.

The French postal company La Poste acquired a total of 83.32% of DPD Deutscher Paketdienst in 1999 and divided it into its subsidiary GeoPost in 2001, which has been the sole shareholder of DPD since 2016. The acronym DPD was retained during the takeover and expanded in 2006 to include the individual country-specific branches of GeoPost. DPD was changed to the international name Dynamic Parcel Distribution in 2008 .

The company and its franchise partners have been transporting goods in all European countries in a climate-neutral manner since 2012 . For example, parcels are delivered in various cities with electrically powered cargo bikes and battery-powered VW Crafter are used.

In August 2013 DPD became a shareholder in the same-day delivery platform Tiramizoo . In 2015 GeoPost founded the brand name DPDgroup for the global designation of the individual branches. The management of the brand is still in the hands of DPD Germany.

In the same year, the DPDgroup entered into a more detailed cooperation agreement with PostNord , so that DPD shipments in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland have since been distributed with the help of PostNord using the DPD logo.

In 2018 DPD took over the majority of the parcel service provider Ninja Van and is therefore also represented in several countries in Southeast Asia .

In 2019 DPDgroup announced that it would take over the delivery of the last mile from the largest private parcel service provider Geis Group in the Czech Republic and Slovakia . Both companies want to work more closely together in the future. In the same year, the DPDgroup generated sales of € 7.8 billion from sending 1.3 billion parcels worldwide. According to the brand, a total of 75,000 employees worked for the brand.

At the beginning of 2020, the long-time managing director of DPD Germany, Boris Winkelmann, took over the chairmanship of the DPD Group in the French capital and at the same time became “Executive Vice President” of the intermediate holding Geopost. He thus succeeded Paul-Marie Chavanne and is the first German to head the group. Eric Malitzke became his successor at DPD Germany.

Companies

In order to carry out its tasks, the group of companies uses different cooperation models. Both franchisees without participation by a DPD shareholder and those with direct links are integrated into the system.

Small senders can send parcels up to a maximum of 20 kg in DPD parcel shops (called: pick-up shops ) within the EU or order a pick-up. Companies can arrange for collection to be set up on working days. Deliveries are only made on weekdays with a maximum of three delivery attempts at the recipient. They can use an application called Predict to specify alternative delivery options or parking permits or to have it delivered directly to a parcel shop for collection. This is also indicated to the recipient by a map display via email.

As a result of the integration into the GeoPost company, the DPDgroup grew steadily and is represented in more and more locations worldwide through partnerships or acquisitions from franchise partners. The group under the DPD brand includes the following companies:

DPD Austria

The DPD Direct Parcel Distribution Austria GmbH (formerly APS Austria Package System ) was established in 1988 and is Austria's leading private parcel service. DPD Austria belongs to the shipping companies Gebrüder Weiss , Lagermax and Schachinger Logistik and also uses their networks for its services. In 2018, the company said it had 1700 employees and sent a total of 50 million parcels nationally and internationally.

DPD Germany

The DPD Germany GmbH (until August 2017: DPD GeoPost (Germany) GmbH ) is a German parcel and express service provider based in Aschaffenburg, the part of the international DPDgroup. DPD Germany transports 375 million parcels every year, a third of them to private recipients. This makes the company the second largest service provider for deliveries in Germany.

Throughout Germany DPD has a total of 78 parcel sorting centers and 9,500 employees as well as 11,000 delivery agents. Parcels can be picked up in 7,000 parcel shops within Germany or given for dispatch by DPD.

In 2011 DPD was the first parcel service provider in Germany to introduce advance notice for parcels under the name "Flex delivery". The product announced the package delivery the day before, named a three-hour delivery window on the delivery day and also offered the option of postponing the delivery period. The offer was gradually expanded to include further options, including the diversion to a parcel shop.

In July 2014, "FlexZustellung" was renamed "Predict". This was accompanied by a new time window of one hour as an announcement and the introduction of parcel tracking via live tracking - a unique selling point within the parcel industry at the time.

At the beginning of December 2016 , the DPD Foundation to support educational opportunities for children was established in cooperation with Stiftung Hilfe mit Plan , a subsidiary of Plan International .

criticism

  • In 2010, the parcel service was rated “satisfactory” in a test by Stiftung Warentest . The customer service and the shipping of the goods were criticized. The test was repeated in 2014 with the same result, but the term of the packages is said to have been shortened.
  • In 2012, the outsourcing of the logistics center in Duisburg was reversed due to the commitment of the DPD works council Tahir Sogukkan.
  • Günter Wallraff denounced the working conditions at parcel services in 2014 in Die Loadträger .
