Issy-les-Moulineaux is a French city with 68,451 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) southwest of Paris . It is 6.6 km from the center of Paris, located in the Hauts-de-Seine in the region of Ile-de-France . It is one of the most densely populated communities in Europe . The inhabitants are called Isséens .
Issy-les-Moulineaux changed from an industrial past to a central service location ( Val de Seine ) specializing in media and telecommunications. Despite the rapidly growing population, there are still more jobs than residents here.
Surname
Formerly Issy-les-Moulineaux was simply called Issy, derived from the Middle Latin Issiacum / Isciacum , (property of Isicius / Iccius, a Gallo-Roman landowner). On the other hand, the name can also come from the Celtic and then means something like under the wood .
In 1893 Issy was officially renamed Issy-les-Moulineaux. Les Moulineaux was the name of a small town in the commune area; apparently the name Les Moulineaux came from windmills (French: moulins ) that stood there.
history
On January 1, 1860, Paris was enlarged to include areas of adjacent municipalities. For this reason about a third of the commune of Issy-les-Moulineaux was added to the city of Paris; today this area essentially corresponds to the Javel district in the 15th arrondissement of Paris.
In the late 19th century, a large area in Issy was used as a military training area. At the beginning of the 20th century, in the pioneering days of aviation, this area developed into an airfield and the first center of French aviation. The airfield in Issy-les-Moulineaux was the scene of numerous flight experiments, first flights and flight competitions. Photographers, newspaper reporters and secret service agents from other countries gathered there to report on developments.
