Dapaong

Dapaong is the northernmost city of Togo and the capital of the Togolese region of Savanes . In 1981 the city had 16,939 inhabitants, in 2010 it was 58,071 and for 2016 it is estimated to be 64,800 inhabitants. This makes the city one of the ten largest cities in the country.

The city is located about 25 kilometers east of the border with Ghana and south of the border with Burkina Faso (as the crow flies). The capital Lomé is a good 500 kilometers south as the crow flies.

Dapaong lies on a flat plain at 300 meters above sea level. The landscape on the border of the Sahel is dominated by a rather dry steppe climate, hence the name of the region Savanes (= savannas ) is derived.

Since 1960 Dapaomg has been the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dapaong .

The Togolese national road N 1 runs through the city from Lomé (618 km) to the border near Burkina Faso (38 km).
