Sophie Morel

Sophie Morel (born December 16, 1979 in Issy-les-Moulineaux ) is a French mathematician who deals with the Langlands program and algebraic geometry.

Morel studied mathematics from 1999 at the École normal supérieure (ENS) in Paris and from 2002 at the University of Paris-South , where she received her doctorate in 2005 from Gérard Laumon ( Complexes d´intersection des compactifications de Baily-Borel. Le cas des groupes unitaires sur Q ). Her doctoral thesis was seen as a significant advance in the Langland program. From 2006 to 2009 she was at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey . In 2009 she became a professor at Harvard University in Cambridge , Massachusetts . She has been a Clay Research Fellow there since 2006 . In 2013 she returned to Princeton, this time as a professor at Princeton University .

Part of the Langland program consists in the calculation of Hasse-Weil zeta functions on Shimura varieties , for which the number of points of the Shimura varieties over finite fields must be calculated. The problem was particularly open in the non-compact case. Morel developed a simple description of the intersection complexes of Baily-Borel compactifications of Shimura varieties over finite fields and obtained a formula for the trace of the Frobenius operator on the intersection homology .

In 2012 she received the EMS Prize . In 2010 she was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Hyderabad ( The intersection complex as a weight truncation and an application to Shimura Varieties ).
