Gérard Laumon (* 1952 in Lyon ) is a French mathematician who deals with algebraic geometry (Shimura varieties, Drinfeld modules, Langlands conjectures ).

Laumon in Oberwolfach 2004

Laumon studied from 1972 at the École normal supérieure and received his doctorate in 1983 with Luc Illusie at the University of Paris-Süd with the dissertation Caractéristiques d'Euler-Poincaré et sommes exponentials . Since 1989 he has been Director of Research of the CNRS at the Laboratoire de Mathématique d´Orsay.

In 1992, together with Michael Rapoport and Ulrich Stuhler , he proved the local Langlands conjectures for function fields ( Inventiones Mathematicae 1993). In 2004 he and the Vietnamese mathematician Ngô Bao Châu received the Clay Research Award for their proof of the fundamental lemma from Robert Langlands for unitary groups. Following the ideas of Vladimir Drinfeld , he also proposed a geometric Langland program (Duke Mathematical Journal Vol. 54, 1987).

In 1987 he gave a new proof of the generalization of the Weil conjectures by Pierre Deligne (which he had proved in 1980 after he had given a first proof in 1974).

His PhD students include the Fields Medal Prize winner Laurent Lafforgue (PhD 1994), who proved the long-country conjectures for the general linear group for functional bodies, and Ngô Bao Châu (PhD 1997) and Sophie Morel .

In 1987 he received the CNRS silver medal . In 1992 he received the Ernest Dechelle Prize from the French Academy of Sciences. He has been a member of the Académie des sciences since 2004 and of the Academia Europaea since 2013 . In 2006 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Madrid ( Aspects geometriques du lemme fondamentale de Langlands-Shelstad ) and in 1990 at the ICM in Kyoto ( La transformation de Fourier geometrique et ses applications ). He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
