The Gebrüder Weiss GmbH is the oldest Austrian companies in the transport and logistics .

The group is a private forwarding company wholly owned by the Senger-Weiss and Jerie families. The company headquarters is in Lauterach in Vorarlberg . The company is represented at 150 locations worldwide and since the EU's eastward expansion in 2004 it has also been increasingly active in Eastern and Central Europe. In 2006, Gebrüder Weiss opened its largest logistics terminal in the Vienna area in Maria Lanzendorf near Schwechat. In addition to the implementation of regular services and parcel services , customer-specific transport and logistics solutions are also offered.

prehistory

The Lindauer Bote (transport service between Lindau and Milan ) was first mentioned in a document in 1322, and in 1474 the family and the “Vis” (white) were first mentioned in connection with the expansion of the Via Mala .

Company founded in 1823

In 1823 the Gebrüder Weiss company was founded in Fußach and in 1872 the company's headquarters were relocated to Bregenz .

By 1914, Gebrüder Weiss built branches in the Danube Monarchy - among others in Vienna, Venice, Genoa and Trieste, but also in Buchs (Switzerland). Ferdinand Weiss took over the management in 1921 and branches were subsequently established in Hamburg and Wels. The expansion phase in Austria began in 1950: new branches were opened in Innsbruck, Graz and Linz. The Western Europe traffic and the air freight organization were established. Heidegunde and Paul Senger-Weiss took over the management of the company in 1968 and Gebrüder Weiss OHG was converted into a GmbH in 1972.

The Gebrüder Weiss group with holding company is created in 1980 and the organization is expanded in Switzerland and the German Lake Constance region. In the same year the company received the state award and has since been allowed to use the federal coat of arms in business transactions.

The parcel service APS-Austria Paket System (today: DPD Austria ) was founded in 1988 and further cooperation / franchise agreements with DPD followed .

From 1989 expansion to Central and Eastern Europe

After the fall of the Iron Curtain , Gebrüder Weiss expanded into the neighboring Central and Eastern European countries (CEEC) in 1989. Special attention was also paid to expanding the branch network in neighboring countries (Budapest, Prague, Brno, Bratislava, Maribor, Ljubljana) and in the Far East (Shanghai, Hong Kong, Quingdao).

In 1999 new branches were opened in the Czech Republic (Budweis, Hradec Králové, Ostrava), as well as in Hungary and China (Nanjing). The subsidiary inet-logistics was founded. A joint venture has strengthened the presence in Singapore since 2000 and the branch network in China (Ningbo, Beijing), in Croatia (Zagreb, Osijek, Karlovac) and in the Czech Republic (Pilsen) was further expanded. The subsidiary "x | vise - innovative logistics" was founded. Majority interests were acquired in 2001 in the freight forwarders Cargolog Bulgaria and Cargolog Romania. The express forwarding service "ORANGE on time" started in Austria and new locations in Tianjin and Dalian were opened in China .

A joint venture was entered into with Röhlig & Co in the USA with five new locations and Gebrüder Weiss received the A license for the Shanghai location . Gebrüder Weiss has now also started operations in Serbia-Montenegro. Together with the Gebrüder Weiss partner Röhlig & Co., a branch was opened in Dubai in 2004 and the Chinese branch network was expanded (Zhanjiang, Xiamen).

In 2007, sales increased by nine percent to EUR 950 million with 4,328 employees. Since January 7, 2008, the “Orange Combi Cargo” freight train (OCC, so called based on the company color) has been operating as an exclusive block train between Vienna and Bludenz every day . Since September 22, 2008, another OCC has also been serving the Vienna- Salzburg route .

On August 3, 2009 , after a year of construction, a new logistics terminal was put into operation in Maria Saal ( Carinthia ). In September 2009 a logistics terminal was opened in Bucharest. In the same month Gebrüder Weiss took over 16 locations in India and founded "Weiss-Röhlig India".

In 2009, more than 75 percent of the international freight forwarder Eurocargo, which operates in Serbia, was taken over.

In 2010 Gebrüder Weiss bought 25 percent of the international forwarding company Wilhelm Diehl from Esslingen (Germany).

In autumn 2010, Gebrüder Weiss published a sustainability report based on the standards of the Global Reporting Initiative .

In 2011 the company acquired a wind farm in northern Germany. In addition, for the first time in its 500-year history, the company achieved sales of more than one billion euros in the 2011 financial year.

In 2012 Gebrüder Weiss achieved preliminary net sales of 1.15 billion euros and entered into a joint venture with “Tegeta Motors Ltd.” in Tbilisi (Georgia). In April 2012, Gebrüder Weiss took over 100% of the Diehl forwarding company in Baden-Württemberg, and it was the start of operational business in Montenegro. A new branch in the Czech Republic was opened in Jeneč, and Gebrüder Weiss took over the Japanese logistics service provider "JHB Express" in Asia.

In 2013 Gebrüder Weiss built a new logistics center in Tbilisi, Georgia, and took over the "Far Freight" forwarding company, which specializes in the CIS and Caucasus countries. Weiss-Röhlig set up two new offices in Vietnam.

In 2014 Gebrüder Weiss opened a branch in Istanbul (Turkey). In China, the company founded a joint venture with the Jilin International Transport Corporation (JIT) with a focus on automotive logistics.

At the beginning of 2015 a new branch with three branches was opened in Russia. On March 21, 2017, the company announced that the Deutsche Transport-Compagnie (DTC), with its locations in Nuremberg, Lossburg and Lüdenscheid, had been taken over by the Diehl family with economic effect at the beginning of 2017 .

In 2017, Gebrüder Weiss founded its own national organization in the USA with headquarters in Chicago and locations in New York, Atlanta, Boston, Dallas and Los Angeles.

Awards

  • On November 13, 2008, Gebrüder Weiss received the Austrian State Prize for the OCC .
  • On October 12, 2010, the company received the federal coat of arms “ State-awarded training company ” from the Federal Ministry of Economics, Family and Youth (BMWFJ) in Vienna .
  • Heidi Senger-Weiss was inducted into the “Logistics Hall of Fame” in November 2015 as the first woman.
  • In addition, Gebrüder Weiss received the German Prize for Online Communication in 2015 for the “Logistics Expert” game app.
  • In 2002, Gebrüder Weiss was named the best Austrian family company by the daily newspaper “ WirtschaftsBlatt ”.
  • Heidi and Paul Senger-Weiss were named WU Manager of the Year 2003.

criticism

The company came under fire in Salzburg in 2019. For expansion plans, the moor area, which gives the district of Schallmoos its name, is to be drained and cleared. Construction work began in February 2020 in parallel with pending legal proceedings.
