history

On May 1, 1852, the businessman Carl Röhlig founded the Röhlig company in Bremen as a tobacco trading company and agency for insurance and it was not until 1859 that the forwarding and freight business began. The company grew during the period of industrialization, free trade and the up-and-coming steamship industry. After the death of Carl Röhlig in 1886, his sons Oskar and Eduard Röhlig ran the company and founded branches in Hamburg, Bremerhaven and Übersee. From 1913, Karl Herwig, Oskar Röhlig's son-in-law and great-uncle of the current owner, ran the company in the third generation. The shipping business was changing rapidly. The industry brought large-volume goods on the way. Karl Herwig and his partner Adolf Backhus formed the company into one of the leading German overseas shipping companies in the 1950s and 1960s.

In 1956 there was another generation change: The sons Consul Oscar Herwig and Walther Backhus took over the management of the company together with Hans H. Schackow and expanded the business. The company advanced into new business areas: Parallel to the expansion of sea freight transport, Röhlig strengthened the area of international air freight, the company's second largest business area. This accelerated the worldwide expansion of Röhlig, including with new representative offices in Johannesburg and Sydney. 1985 Thomas W. Herwig took over the business in the fifth generation. The company established branches in Poland, Hong Kong and Singapore, among others, as well as offices in France, Italy and Spain. In the following years, new locations in India, North and South America as well as in Asia expanded the global network. In 2011 Röhlig strengthened its presence in Latin America by taking over its long-term agent Procargo.

In January 2015, Thomas W. Herwig handed over management of the company to his son Philip W. Herwig.

Ownership

The Herwig family (Bremen) holds 85.2% of the shares in the company. 14.8% of the company shares are owned by Gabriele Belz (née Schackow).
