The Stormers (dt. The strikers ; formerly called Western Stormers ) are a rugby union team from the South African city of Cape Town . She plays in the international super rugby league. The home games are played at Newlands Stadium .

history

The four best teams in the Currie Cup , including the Western Province, qualified for the start of the Super 12 in 1996 . In the first season they were only penultimate. For the second season they could not qualify. For the 1998 season, the South African Association relied on a franchise system, as was common in Australia and New Zealand , so that the teams no longer had to go through a detour to qualify. The Stormers, composed of players from the Western Province, were among the four newly formed teams.

In the 1999 season, the Stormers achieved their greatest success to date with the semi-finals. There they were defeated by the Highlanders at 18:33. In the following season they almost managed to get back into the last four, but in the end one point was missing for fourth place. They could not build on their successes in the next few seasons and came in seventh twice and ninth once. In the 2004 season they returned to the road to success and again secured a place in the semifinals. There they lost to the Crusaders with 16:27.

The Stormers 2006

In the following years, the Stormers did not manage to move into the final round. This only succeeded again in 2010 when they lost to the Bulls in the final . In 2012 they finished the regular season in first place, but were eliminated in the semifinals against the Sharks .
