The Sharks (dt. The sharks ; formerly called Coastal Sharks ) are a rugby union team in the South African city of Durban . She plays in the international super rugby league. The home games are played in the Kings Park Stadium.

history

The club has been part of the most important provincial tournament in the southern hemisphere since the first Super 12 season. In the first two seasons, however, the team played as the provincial team Natal , since the Coastal Sharks franchise was not founded until 1995. They managed to get into the final in the second season, where they were inferior to the Auckland Blues with 21:45. In the following season they came to the semifinals, in which they lost again to the Blues. In 1998 the team traded under the name Coastal Sharks and came back to the semifinals, this time they were subject to the Crusaders from New Zealand .

In 1999 and 2000 they could not build on the success of the first seasons, in 2000 they even became the last of the championship. In 2001 they made it back to the finals, but lost there against the Brumbies . In the next few years, the Sharks failed to qualify for the top spots.

In the first season of the competition, which was expanded to 14 teams, the Sharks came in fifth place and only missed the semi-finals due to the difference in points. In the following year 2006, however, they made the leap to first place in the table and thus hosted the semi-finals and later the final, which they lost to the Bulls in the last second . There was another final defeat in 2012 against the Chiefs .
