Super Rugby 2015

The 2016 season marked the sixth edition of Super Rugby , a rugby union competition with 18 franchise teams from Australia , New Zealand and South Africa , and for the first time teams from Japan and Argentina . The season began on February 26, 2016 and ended with the final on August 6, 2016. A total of 142 games were played. The 18 teams were divided into two groups, each with two conferences .

mode

Each team plays in the regular season according to the following pattern:

  • Within the conference: Each team from the two Africa Conferences plays two games against the other three teams in its conference (one home and one away game). Each team in the Australasian groups plays two games against two other teams in its conference (one home and one away game), as well as one game (one home and one away game) against the two remaining teams.
  • Within the group: Each team plays a game against each representative from the other conference of the respective group
  • Other games: Each team plays a game against each representative of a conference of the other group. In 2016 the games between Africa 1 and Australia and between Africa 2 and New Zealand will be played.

The top-ranked teams of the four conferences, the three next-ranked teams in the overall table of the Australasian group and the next ranked in the overall table of the South African group ( wildcard ) move into the play-offs . In the quarterfinals of the playoffs, the conference winners have a home advantage over the wildcard teams. Semi-finals and finals follow, with home rights being determined based on the higher position in the overall table.
