← 1997 season of Super 12 |
The 1998 season marked the third edition of Super 12 , a rugby union competition involving twelve franchise teams from Australia , New Zealand and South Africa .
This season, the South African Rugby Union (SARU) also introduced fixed Super 12 franchises instead of the previous provincial teams. These were the Coastal Sharks , Golden Cats , Northern Bulls, and Western Stormers . There was no relegation between the South African teams.
A total of 69 games were played, with each team playing a round robin against the eleven other teams. There followed two semi-finals and finally the final. The champions were the Crusaders from the New Zealand city of Christchurch for the first time .
