The Lancaster Park was a stadium in the district of Waltham the New Zealand city of Christchurch . It offered space for 43,000 spectators and was the venue for numerous sports such as rugby union , rugby league , cricket , football and athletics . The main users of the facility were the rugby union teams of the Crusaders and the Canterbury Rugby Football Union .

history

The opening took place on October 15, 1881 on the occasion of an athletics event. Horse races were also held here until 1889 . In 1957 the earth dam was enlarged, which made it possible to increase the capacity to 33,000 spectators. After the construction of two additional stands in 1965, there was space for 38,500 spectators. In 2000 the sports facility was rebuilt, the earth dam and a standing room gave way to two new seats. With a view to the Rugby Union World Cup 2011 , the capacity should be increased to 43,000 spectators. On January 20, 2011, the stadium was opened with increased capacity by New Zealand's Prime Minister John Key , only to be badly damaged by the Christchurch earthquake of February 22, 2011 just a little over a month later . The two main stands have sagged by up to 40 cm. Another grandstand was so badly damaged that demolition was recommended. The Organizing Committee of the Rugby Union World Cup 2011 announced on March 16 that there would be no games in Christchurch, the second largest city in the country. Originally, five preliminary round matches and two quarter-finals were planned there.

The demolition of the sports facility began in 2012 and was completed in 2019.

use

In general, the stadium was an important venue for the New Zealand national rugby union team and national cricket team . The first rugby test was against Australia in 1913 . The first test in cricket was held in January 1930 between New Zealand and England , the first One-Day International in February 1973 against Pakistan . At the Rugby Union World Cup in 1987 , three group games and a quarter-finals were played here, and two group games at the 1992 Cricket World Cup .
