history

Until the test status

Cricket has been practiced in New Zealand since the first half of the 19th century; the first game against an international team was against an English team in 1864.

Test status until the advent of one-day cricket

New Zealand became the fifth nation to gain test status in 1930 when it played a test match against England in Christchurch, which it lost with 8 wickets. Until the Second World War, the team played mainly against England and twice against South Africa , but could not win any of these games. The first victory came in 1956 against the West Indies . But even after that almost all games were lost or ended in a draw, so that by 1970 only seven wins out of 95 games.

One-day cricket up to the turn of the millennium

With the advent of one-day cricket , New Zealand found its way into international cricket better. In the first two events of the World Cup in 1975 and 1979 , the team advanced to the semi-finals. In the following two editions ( 1983 and 1987 ) you failed in the preliminary round. New Zealand also steadily improved in test cricket in the 1970s and 1980s. A big reason for this was bowler Richard Hadlee , who improved the attack tremendously. At the Cricket World Cup 1992 they failed again in the semifinals, but only because they lost twice in the tournament against the eventual title winner Pakistan , while they won against all other teams. In the next edition in 1996 they lost to Australia in the quarter-finals before failing again in 1999 against Pakistan in the semi-finals.

Since the turn of the millennium

In 2000 , New Zealand won an international tournament for the first time when the Champions Trophy could be won. At the Cricket World Cup 2003 it was only enough for the Super 6 round, which was mainly due to the rating system. Since New Zealand refused to play against Kenya in Nairobi in the preliminary round for safety reasons , these points were missing in the following round because they were carried over to this round. In 2007 they reached the semi-finals in both the One-Day World Championship and the newly created Twenty20 World Championship . Even if the team was eliminated from the next four Twenty20 World Championships in the Super 8 or Super 10 round, it managed to reach the semifinals of the 2011 Cricket World Cup . During 2015 Cricket World Cup , in which New Zealand next to Australia was one of the hosts, they could qualify for the finals for the first time. There they defeated Australia with 7 wickets. In the 2019 edition , they were also able to qualify for the final, but failed after the game and Super Over ended in a draw in the final, to England, as they had less boundaries during the game.
