The Hagley Oval (formerly Hagley Park New) is a cricket ground in Hagley Park in Christchurch , New Zealand . The cricket field was built in 1851 and the first officially recorded match took place in 1867. The Hagley Oval has been the home of the Canterbury cricket team since 1886 . The oval has been the venue for international test matches and one-day internationals since 2014 .
Capacity & Infrastructure
The stadium has a capacity of 18,000 seats. The two wicket ends are the Port Hills End and the City End .
International cricket
Despite the long cricket tradition at this location, the first international test match did not take place until 2014. Previously, international games were played in Christchurch in Lancaster Park . After the earthquake in 2011, the decision was made to expand the oval, which provoked protests. The first test took place in the stadium in December 2014 against Sri Lanka . At the Cricket World Cup 2015 three preliminary round matches were played and the opening ceremony was held.
National cricket
The Hagley Oval has been the home of the Canterbury cricket team since 1886 .
