Twenty20

The Twenty20 game between England and Sri Lanka on June 15, 2006 at the Rose Bowl near Southampton.

Twenty20 is a form of cricket . It was introduced by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in England for professional county games in 2003 (see Twenty20 Cup ). Both teams play one innings each over a maximum of 20 overs .

A Twenty20 game lasts approximately three hours; H. the innings of both teams each take about 75 - 80 minutes. The aim is to approximate the game length of other popular team sports such as soccer. It was introduced to offer a faster form of play for spectators in the stadium and on television.

Twenty20 was not intended as a replacement, but rather as a complement to first-class and one-day cricket . You could see at the first ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa that the stadiums were sold out. But this form of play has spread so quickly in the world of cricket, as the commercial success of the Indian Premier League has shown, that some commentators are already worried about the future of the more traditional forms of play.

regulate

Since the basic rules of Twenty20 are formally the same as in One-Day Cricket, which is around 40 years older (only the extreme shortening to 20 over each creates the special character of this form of play), the rules (which in cricket are always based on the Actual Laws of Cricket ) very much in this older form of limited-overs cricket:

  • Each bowler may only complete a fifth of the overs, i.e. only 4 overs.
  • If the bowler crosses the so-called popping crease (throw line), which is always punished as a no ball with an automatic point for the batting team, the next throw becomes a free hit : the batsman can hit the ball because he is against a direct throw for this throw Leaving immune will hit you without any danger. In this case, he can only be thrown out of the game by a run-out, or one of the very rare ways such as hitting the ball twice . If the free-hit ball is itself a wide or some kind of no ball, the following throw automatically becomes a free-hit.
  • The referees are required to award five penalty points to the other team if one team is delayed in the game (batting or fielding side). According to the Laws of Cricket, you can actually do this anyway, but this rule is practically not applied internationally.
  • The following restrictions apply to field players:
    • More than five field players may never stand on the leg-side.
    • During the first six overs, the so-called power play , only two field players are allowed outside the 30-yard circle.
    • After these six overs only five players.
  • If the field team does not begin their final over within 75 minutes of the inning, the batting team will be awarded six runs for each full over made after that point. However, the referees must also take into account game delays caused by the batting team, for which the field team cannot be punished.
  • Are the teams at the end of the game level on points with which the game ends in a draw ( tie ), a tiebreaker will be used:
    • Until 2008 this was always handled like normal one-day cricket, where it is only used in the case of knockout games. In this variant, five bowlers on each side bowl once on the opposite wicket, but without a batsman standing there. The team that hits the wicket more often wins. If there is still a tie after every five throwers, it continues in single steps, as in the penalty shootout in football. This variant is called bowl-out .
    • The ICC has planned a new system for the second Twenty20 World Cup in England in 2009 , but it was used for the first time at an international match between New Zealand and the West Indies on December 26, 2008 in Auckland / New Zealand: In a kind of mini-match zu One over per team, one bowler and three batsmen are nominated who carry out this "match" according to the normal cricket rules, i. H. Since you only have three batsmen available, this mini-innings is completed after six regular balls, but no later than two wickets. If there is still a tie after that, the team with more sixes wins , then the team with more fours from (in this case) two innings of the game. This form of game decision is known as a super over or one-over eliminator .

Twenty20 status

At the beginning of the international events, only full members of the ICC were initially allowed to hold official Twenty20 matches. As of 2007, individual associate members were granted the right to do the same. From 2019 this restriction will drop and all associate members of the ICC are entitled to host Twenty20 Internationals.

Records

On July 13, 2011, the Namibian national cricket team set numerous unofficial world records for Twenty20 international matches against the Kenyan cricket team , including the highest score with 262 runs for 1 wicket. Louis van der Westhuizen achieved the highest number of single points with 159 runs and with 16 the highest number of "sixes" in an innings , as well as together with Sarel Burger the highest number of points (so-called partnership ) with 168 * (not out) for the 2. Wicket. Although the game was part of an official ICC tournament ( ICC Africa Region Division One Twenty20 ), these records are still unofficial in that the game does not have the status of a Twenty20 International Match .
