ICC World Twenty20 2009

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ICC World Twenty20 2009 was the second world championship in men's Twenty20 cricket after the ICC World Twenty20 2007 and took place from June 5th to 21st, 2009 in England. In the final Pakistan was able to prevail against Sri Lanka with 8 wickets . With the British government planning to deny the Zimbabwean crew entry to the UK, fears have been raised that the orientation could have been given to another country. Zimbabwe, however, withdrew from the tournament.

qualification

The ten test nations were automatically qualified. In addition, there were two participating countries from the group of associate members of the ICC. These were determined in a qualifying tournament from 2nd to 4th August 2008 in Belfast (Northern Ireland) . Ireland (Republic of Ireland plus Northern Ireland), Kenya, Scotland, Netherlands, Canada and Bermuda took part in this tournament. Ireland and the Netherlands were able to prevail, but were unable to host the final due to rain. After Zimbabwe withdrew, the third-placed qualifier, Scotland , moved up. For the group division of the World Cup, Ireland was placed in front of the Netherlands based on the ODI ranking and plays in group A instead of Zimbabwe.

Tournament mode

The group composition, based on the final placements of the first tournament in South Africa in 2007, was determined on October 31, 2007. The first two teams in each group qualify for the intermediate round, the so-called Super 8 , in which they each play three more games. This is followed by the semi-finals and final. The grouping of the Super 8 and the corresponding pairings refer to the seeding lists of the preliminary round, not to the placements. For example, India is treated as "A1" even if the team only comes second in their group. Only if the first or second seed does not qualify for the next round will their seeding list be taken over by the team seeded at three.
