The ICC T20 World Cup (until 2018 ICC World Twenty20 ) is the world championship tournament in Twenty20 cricket . It is organized by the ICC and took place for the first time in 2007. Since 2009, the competition for women has been held in parallel.
Until 2016, the tournament was held with 8 or 10 teams each, whereby in the latter case all nations with test status were represented and supplemented by a few qualifiers. From 2020 the first 10 teams of the ICC T20I Championship will be qualified for the tournament and will be complemented by 6 qualifiers.
Under the name ICC Women's World Twenty20, the women's tournament took place parallel to the men's tournament and was contested by 8 teams each. From 2014, the tournament was held with ten teams and from 2018 onwards, it was held independently of the men's tournament. Since 2020 it has been called the ICC Women's T20 World Cup .
