United Arab Emirates national cricket team

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The United Arab Emirates national cricket team represents the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at international cricket matches . In 1989 the team was accepted as an affiliate member by the International Cricket Council , before being promoted to associate member the following year. The UAE is currently in 13th place in the Associate ODI ranking.

Before joining the ICC

Cricket was introduced to the UAE by the United Kingdom in 1892. It was initially operated mainly by members of the British military. After the UAE became independent in 1971, the popularity of sport initially decreased, but it increased again with the influx of South Asian workers in the 1980s. The national team's first game was played in 1976 against the Pakistani first-class team of Pakistan International Airlines. International games in the UAE mostly took place without the participation of a local national team, such as the Asia Cup in 1984.

List A and One-Day Internationals

With the establishment of the Emirates Cricket Board and admission to the ICC in 1989, games against other national teams became possible. First they lost in 1990 with two major defeats against the Netherlands . That spurred efforts to get South Asian players to play in the country to give them the opportunity to start for the UAE team. This paid off when the team qualified for the 1996 Cricket World Cup . However, it also meant that the ICC tightened the rules for playing a foreign national team. At the World Cup, the UAE could only win against the Netherlands and otherwise lost all preliminary round matches. In the further course, after Bangladesh was declared a full member, the team was able to establish itself as the best Asian associate team. However, he only managed to qualify for the main tournament when he qualified for the 2015 Cricket World Cup .

Twenty20

It was not until 2010 that the team got the opportunity to qualify for the ICC World Twenty20. However, she only finished third there and thus missed qualifying for the main tournament. In the next qualification it was not even enough for the qualifying tournament when they were eliminated in the Asian regional qualification . The first qualification for the main tournament was achieved at the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier 2013 . However, it was there then no game will be won and so the team was eliminated in the first round without a win.
