history

Before joining the ICC

Cricket was introduced to Canada in the second half of the 18th century. The first recorded games took place in 1785 in Île Sainte-Hélène . The first international game took place in 1844 when a Canadian team played against the United States in New York. When the state of Canada was founded in 1867, cricket was initially very popular and was even made a national sport by Prime Minister John Macdonald . However, due to the spread of baseball from the USA, the sport was pushed back. During this time Australian and English teams toured Canada and in 1887 the first official Canadian team traveled to England. In 1892 the Canadian Cricket Association was founded. Up until the First World War, games against the USA took place regularly, but these were discontinued after 1912. It was not until the 1930s that tours by Australian and English teams began again. After World War II, the Marylebone Cricket Club visited Canada in 1951, which was Canada's first first-class match . Further clashes against English teams showed good results, but there was no upgrade to a test team . Canada has been an Associate Member of the International Cricket Council since 1968 .

One-day internationals

Canada participated in the first ICC Trophy in 1979 . By reaching the final, which was lost to Sri-Lanka , the team qualified for the 1979 Cricket World Cup . As part of the final tournament, the first One-Day International took place, but all three preliminary round games were lost. In the next editions of the ICC Trophy, the team was unsuccessful and was only able to qualify for the World Championship on domestic grounds in 2001 . At the final tournament in South Africa , the team managed a victory against the Bangladeshi national cricket team , but in this case, too, was over after the preliminary round. In 2005 they qualified again and received ODI status. At the final tournament, the 2007 Cricket World Cup in the West Indies, the team remained without a win. In the following World Cup in 2011 , the team achieved a victory against Kenya , but was eliminated again in the preliminary round. After three appearances at the finals the team missed the 2014 Cricket World Cup Qualifier re-qualification in New Zealand. The team failed to qualify for the qualification for the Cricket World Cup 2019 .
