German national cricket team
The German national cricket team represents Germany at international cricket games and tournaments.
The international association, the International Cricket Council (ICC), currently (August 2010) ranks Germany in 43rd place, in Europe in 10th place.
history
Although the German Cricket Association (DCB) only became a member of the ICC in 1991, Germany played two international matches against Denmark in 1989 .
The first tournament in which Germany participated was the European Cricketer Cup in Guernsey in 1990. The team won the second edition in 1992 in Worksop (England) and was therefore able to compete against the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) on Lord's Cricket Ground . England national soccer player Gary Lineker played for the MCC in this encounter, but only scored one run , which led him to remark that he always scores one against Germany.
Germany hosted the first European Nations Cup in Berlin in 1993. In 1995 the team took part in the European Nations Cup in Oxford . The following year, the DCB hosted the tournament again. In 1997 Germany only failed in the final against France with one run difference. The French batsman David Bordes ran the ultimately decisive leg bye despite a broken skull . The Wisden Cricketers' Almanack included this game in its 2000 edition in the list of the 100 best games of the 20th century.
Germany has been taking part in the European Cricket Championship regularly since 1998, and in the second division since 2000.
After becoming an Associate Member of the ICC in 1999, Germany was eligible to compete in Canada for the first time in 2001 for the qualification tournament for the Cricket World Cup , which was then still known as the ICC Trophy . The team did not get beyond the preliminary round.
The ICC World Cricket League with several divisions has been qualifying for the World Cup since 2007. Germany reached 7th place out of twelve participants in Division Five in Jersey in 2008 .
Steven Nox has been the national coach of the men's national team since 2013 .
