Cricket World Cup 2003

The 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup , which was held in South Africa from February 9 to March 24, 2003 , was the eighth Cricket World Cup and the first to be held on the African continent. The World Cup is played in one-day international format, in which each team competes one innings over a maximum of 50 overs . Australia was able to defend its title from 1999 in the final against India .

In addition to the 10 nations with test status, Kenya, which had ODI status, as well as three qualifiers who were able to prevail in the ICC Trophy 2001 , qualified as participants. The 14 participants were thus:

12 stadiums in South Africa as well as two stadiums in Zimbabwe and one in Kenya were selected as the venues. In stadiums that were not in South Africa, some games of the preliminary round were played with the participation of the respective home teams. However, the team from England in Harare and the New Zealand team in Nairobi refused to compete and each referred to security risks.

format

In two preliminary round groups, each with seven teams, everyone played against each other, with a win earning 4 points, a tie or no result earning 2 points. The first three of each group qualified for the so-called Super Six, in which each team still played against the teams that had not met in the preliminary round and whose results they took over into this round. From this, the first four of the table qualified for the semi-finals, the winners of which then played the final. In total there were 54 encounters.

The preliminary round was held in two groups with seven teams each, with the first three of each group qualifying for the Super Six. The following terms are used in the tables:
