The Namibian national cricket team represents Namibia in international cricket . It is set up by the National Cricket Association Namibia . Trainer (as of April 2019) is Pierre de Bruyn .

The team's greatest successes were participation in the 2003 Cricket World Cup in South Africa and 2nd place in the 2007/08 ICC Intercontinental Cup as well as victory in the ICC World Cricket League Division 2. In October 2019, the Namibian national team won the ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier 2019 to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2020 .

history

The first official cricket match took place in Namibia in 1915 between a team of South African soldiers and a local group from Otjiwarongo . With the occupation of Namibia by South Africa , cricket began to develop on a professional level.

On Namibian Independence Day, March 21, 1990 and the following days, the Gloucestershire County Cricket Club team played against the first national team of Namibia, from which Namibia emerged three times as the winner. Namibia also won the following games against the Dutch national cricket team .

The Namibian national team first took part in qualifying for the 1996 Cricket World Cup in 1994 and came in ninth. At the Cricket World Cup 2003 Namibia took part for the first and so far only time in a Cricket World Cup.

The competition was discontinued after one season and the teams were partially integrated into the Intercontinental Cup.

ICC 6 Nations Challenge

The ICC 6 Nations Challenge took place between 2000 and 2004. The best Associate Members of the International Cricket Council were eligible to participate .

youth

The Namibian junior cricket team is one of the most successful on the African continent. The team took part in the 2006 Cricket World Cup U-19 and won the “ICC Africa U19 CWCQ” in September 2010 in Windhoek . She qualified for the 2012 World Cup and reached the quarter-finals in 2016 , after defeating defending champions South Africa. In the end, the team took a very good 7th place.

Records

On July 13, 2011, the Namibian national cricket team set numerous unofficial world records for Twenty20 international matches against the Kenyan national cricket team , including the highest score with 262 runs for 1 wicket. Louis van der Westhuizen achieved the highest number of single points with 159 runs and with 16 the highest number of "sixes" in an innings , as well as together with Sarel Burger the highest number of points (so-called partnership ) with 168 * (not out) for the 2. Wicket. Although the game was part of an official ICC tournament ( ICC Africa Region Division One Twenty20 ), these records are still unofficial in that the game does not have the status of a Twenty20 International Match .
