ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier is the qualifying tournament for the Cricket World Cup since 1979. Up to and including 2005 the tournament was called the ICC Trophy .

history

For the World Cup, which has been held since 1975, the ten test cricket nations are automatically qualified. In addition to the six test nations at the time, Sri Lanka and East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda) were invited to the first World Cup ; a qualifying tournament in the form of the ICC Trophy was only held with the second event. Up to and including 2001, only the so-called associate members were admitted to this, not the affiliate members of the International Cricket Council (ICC) . The German team has only taken part in the 2001 tournament in Canada and officially won three of its five preliminary round matches.

The number of participants in the ICC Trophy 2005 was reduced to 12 teams, for which previous elimination tournaments were necessary, and with Oman, an affiliate member appeared for the first time .

For the first time five teams qualified for the World Cup 2007 in the Caribbean ( West Indies ), all of which were automatically granted official One-Day International (ODI) status , including the one innovation . In addition to these five qualifiers, Kenya was also the only country outside of the ten test nations to have had this status.

For the 2011 World Cup , the number of qualifiers was reduced to four, especially since Kenya has now also lost its status as an automatic qualifier. However, the unqualified fifth and sixth placed teams will continue to receive ODI status.

There was a lot of controversy about qualifying for the upcoming Cricket World Cup 2015 . So the ICC initially planned to abolish the qualification entirely and only grant the ten test nations a right to participate in the World Cup. However, this was rejected again. and now the two best-placed teams of the Intercontinental One-Day Cup 2011-13 should qualify first. Then there are two further qualifiers that will be determined at the Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2013.
