The Afghan national cricket team is the national selection of the country Afghanistan . She has been a member of the ICC since 2001 and of the ACC since 2003 .
history
Originally, the Taliban regime banned cricket , but there were some changes in early 2000 when cricket was allowed as the only sport. Until then, cricket was little known in Afghanistan. In 2001 the Afghan national team took part in a four-country tournament and was accepted into the ICC as an affiliate member. In June 2013 Afghanistan was declared an Associate Member of the ICC. On June 22nd, 2017 it was announced that Afghanistan, along with Ireland, had been appointed full member of the ICC and should therefore receive test status in the future.
One-day international
In 2004, the Afghan national team played in the ACC Trophy in Kuala Lumpur , where they moved up to sixth place with two wins over Bahrain and host Malaysia . When she participated in the ACC Trophy 2006, she reached a third place, as well as two years later in the ACC Trophy Elite. At the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2009 , the team narrowly missed qualifying for the Cricket World Cup 2011 with a fifth place , but received official ODI status until 2013. In the run-up to this tournament, the team was able to set strong accents. So she won the World Cricket League Division 5, 4 and 3 one after the other. She also won the ACC Trophy Elite 2010 with a 95 run victory against Nepal . In the qualification process for the Cricket World Cup 2015 they finished second behind Ireland in the Intercontinental Cup 2011-2013 one-day tournament and were thus able to qualify for the finals. There they managed to win their first World Cup with a narrow win against Scotland . In qualifying for the Cricket World Cup 2019 , the team was able to qualify for their second World Cup. There they couldn't win and were eliminated in the preliminary round.
Twenty20
In addition to the championships in the One-Day International format, the team was also represented in the Twenty20 format. Here she managed a shared victory with the team from Oman at the ACC Twenty20 Cup 2007 and two years later she won the trophy alone. In 2010 the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier could be won with an 8 wicket win over Ireland, which means they were at the ICC World Twenty20 2010 . Here, however, they lost their two games against India and South Africa in the preliminary round and were eliminated. In qualifying for the Twenty20 World Cup in 2012 in the United Arab Emirates, the team was initially able to confidently qualify for the World Cup with eight wins in eight games. However, they lost to Ireland in the final and finished second. At the main tournament they lost their games against India and England and were eliminated after the preliminary round. In the next qualifying round they finished second behind Ireland and were able to qualify again for the final tournament. Here they first managed a victory against Hong Kong, but they lost against Nepal and Bangladesh and were eliminated in the preliminary round. In the next qualification cycle, the team qualified as the fifth team for the finals. There they managed to leave the full member Zimbabwe behind in the preliminary round and move into the Super 8 round. There was another victory against the West Indies , but they were eliminated as the group bottom.
First class
By placing in the last World Cup Qualifier, the team qualified for the ICC Intercontinental Cup 2009-2010 , which will be held as a first-class tournament. There it was able to prevail against the Netherlands, Ireland and Canada and achieve a draw against Zimbabwe . In the final, the team prevailed against Scotland and won the tournament. When the ICC Intercontinental Cup 2011-2013 they were able to qualify for the final, where they lost to Ireland.
Test cricket
After becoming a test nation, they completed their first test on June 14 and 15, 2018 in Bengaluru against India . The game was won by India with an innings victory. The second test, which was held as a home test in India, was won by Afghanistan against Ireland in the 2018/19 season. They also won their first away test against Bangladesh in the 2019/20 season .
