The ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 is the 13th Cricket World Cup of the International Cricket Council . The World Cup is to be held in India alone for the first time in October and November 2023 . The country co-hosted it in 1987 , 1996 and 2011 .

prehistory

The tournament was originally scheduled between February 9 and March 26, 2023, but was postponed to autumn 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

qualification

Qualification path to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023

As in the previous World Cup, ten teams are to take part in this World Cup. The main qualification results from the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League 2020–2022 which is to be played from July 2020 to March 2022. Of the 13 participants, the best seven teams and hosts India qualify directly for the Cricket World Cup. The remaining two places will be played in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2022 . In addition to the five teams in the Super League that did not qualify directly, the three best teams from the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 2019-2022, which was held for the first time (between August 2019 and January 2022) , also qualify . The remaining two places for the qualifier will be determined by a play-off tournament between the non-qualified teams of the Cricket World Cup League 2 and the two best teams of the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League 2019-2021 .

The ICC Cricket World Cup Super League 2020-2022 (CWC Super League 2020-22) qualifies the following teams:

  • India India
  • First of the CWC Super League 2020-22
  • Runner-up in the CWC Super League 2020-22
  • Third in the CWC Super League 2020-22
  • Fourth in the CWC Super League 2020-22
  • Fifth in the CWC Super League 2020-22
  • Sixth in the CWC Super League 2020–22
  • Seventh in the CWC Super League 2020-22

The following teams qualify through the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2022 (CWC Qualifier 2022):

  • First of the CWC Qualifier 2022
  • Second in the CWC Qualifier 2022

format

The tournament is divided into a preliminary round and a knockout round and thus uses the format that was used at the Cricket World Cup in 1992 and 2019. In the preliminary round, each team plays once against each other. There are two points for a win, one point for a tie or no result. The best four teams qualify for the semi-finals, the winners of which will then in turn play the final.
