The Basin Reserve (also "The Basin") is a cricket ground in Wellington , New Zealand . It opened in 1868 and is New Zealand's oldest cricket stadium. The stadium is the venue for international test matches and one-day internationals .

Capacity & Infrastructure

Because of its long tradition, the stadium is the only sports facility on the National Heritage list . In contrast to other conventional cricket stadiums, the Basin Reserve has some special features: The playing field is not surrounded by large stands. The large grassy areas offer plenty of space for the spectators, who mostly watch the match lying on blankets. Another special feature is that the cricket field is directly surrounded by high mountains: Mount Victoria and Mount Cook . This provides protection from the wind and the sun's warmth is retained there longer. The cricket stadium is therefore also known as the island of cricket . The stadium's capacity is 11,600. The two wicket ends are named Vance Stand End and Scoreboard End .

history

In 1855 there was an earthquake in the region. Only then did enough space become available for a cricket field and the surrounding buildings. At the same time the popularity of cricket increased and it was decided to build a stadium. In 1857 many famous Wellington residents advocated the construction of a cricket field. Half of the construction costs were borne by cricketers, the other half was provided by the state. In 1868, 13 years after the earthquake, the first cricket match took place. On December 11, 1866, it was officially determined that the cricket ground is the home stadium for the Wellington Cricket Club. On November 30, 1873, the first first-class match between Wellington and Auckland took place.

International cricket

The stadium was the first venue for a test match between New Zealand and England on January 24, 1930 . The first ODI carried out the same pairing in 1975. Since then it has been a regular venue for international games, but most of the ODIs in Wellington were played there after the Westpac Stadium was completed in 1999.

National cricket

The cricket stadium is the home stadium of the Welligtoner cricket team, which has first-class status. The 400th first-class match was held in the 2009/2010 season. On February 28, 2016, the stadium was the venue for the Island of Origin match, where the best players from the North and South Island competed against each other.
