Mount Victoria is both a prominent hill east of the center of Wellington in New Zealand , called by the Māori Matairangi , and a district of Wellington located in its vicinity.

hill

The hill, up to 196  m high, is located east of Wellington city center and extends south from Wellington Harbor . Together with the 178  m high Mount Albert to the south, it forms the so-called Town Belt between the districts of Mount Victoria in the west and Hataitai in the east. The Mount Victoria can be reached by car. From the parking lot, a path leads to the observation deck, from which the entire urban area of Wellington , Wellington Harbor and its surrounding mountains, such as the Remutaka Range , can be seen. There are some display and information boards on the platform that explain something about the history of the city and the area as well as the geological conditions on site. A sculpture created by Māori points to the importance of the hill for the Māori and the Byrd Sculpture to the Antarctic explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd . Right next to the highest point of the hill is a transmission mast for television and telecommunications.

Two road tunnels lead through the mountain, which connect the two parts of the city in the west and east, and on the north-west flank of the hill towards Oriental Bay is the catholic church St Gerard's , built in 1908 in neo-Gothic style, and the monastery built in 1931.

district

The Mount Victoria district , which administratively belongs to Lambton Ward and consists of residential and business districts, is located on the west side of the range of hills described above. It borders Wellington Harbor and the Oriental Bay district to the north, Te Aro district to the west and Newtown to the south . Two parallel main roads run through the district in a north-south direction and separate it into two halves, the western, more business-oriented part and the eastern part with more residential developments.

Some hotels, the Embassy Theater , two bowling clubs and the Clyde Quay School are located directly in the district and Wellington College and Wellington East Girls College are to be found in the south, adjacent to the Newtown district . The New Zealand State Highway 1 , which runs right through Wellington and ends at Wellington International Airport , runs south through the district and connects Mount Victoria on one side with the city and on the other south and southeast with the airport, Evans Bay and the Miramar Peninsula .
