Sir Richard John Hadlee MBE (born July 3, 1951 in Christchurch , New Zealand ) (nickname: "Paddles") is a former New Zealand cricketer . His father Walter Hadlee and his brothers Dayle and Barry Hadlee also played cricket for the New Zealand national team . Richard Hadlee is considered the best all-rounder in the history of New Zealand cricket. A jury from the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack voted him the second best bowler in test cricket history after Muttiah Muralitharan .

Career

Richard Hadlee made his test debut in February 1973 against Pakistan in Wellington. During his career he played 86 test matches for New Zealand in which he scored a total of 3,124 runs and 431 wickets . This makes him one of only nine players who achieved more than 3000 runs and 300 wickets in the cricket test. Hadlee is also the first cricketer to reach 400 test wicks. For this he only needed 79 tests. Hadlee also played 115 One-Day International Matches (ODIs) for New Zealand. In total, he scored 1751 runs and 158 wickets in ODIs. Hadlee also took part in three cricket world championships ( 1975 , 1979 and 1983 ).

Others

Before his last test assignment, which he played against England in Birmingham in July 1990 , he was knighted. He was also named one of New Zealand's Top 100 History Makers . In April 2009, Richard Hadlee was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.
