Muttiah Muralitharan (born April 17, 1972 in Kandy , Sri Lanka ) (nickname Murali ) is a cricketer from Sri Lanka. He is considered to be one of the best spin bowlers in cricket history. In 1999 he was named one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year . A jury from the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack also voted him the best bowler in test cricket history . According to his own information, he prefers the spelling Muthiah Muralidaran .

"Murali" bowls against Australia

Muttiah Muralitharan played 133 tests for Sri Lanka in his test match career , in which he scored a total of 800 wickets. No other bowler has achieved more test wickets or reached the 800 test wickets mark. This makes him statistically the most successful bowler in test cricket history. Muttiah Muralitharan made his test debut in Colombo in August 1992 against Australia . In his test career, he broke the record for the most wickets scored twice. The first time he broke the record previously held by Courtney Walsh with 519 wickets in May 2004. The second time he broke the record, which was now held by Shane Warne , in 2007 against England.

Muttiah Muralitharan played 350 one-day international matches in his career , scoring a total of 534 wickets. This makes him the record holder for the number of wickets achieved at One-Day Internationals. He exceeded the record previously held by Wasim Akram in 2009. Muralitharan took part in five cricket world championships ( 1996 , 1999 , 2003 , 2007 and 2011 ). In 1996 he was able to win the Cricket World Cup with the team from Sri Lanka.

On July 22, 2010 he ended his test cricket career and after the 2011 World Cup his international career.
