Courtney Andrew Walsh (born October 30, 1962 in Kingston , Jamaica ) is a retired Jamaican cricketer who played for the West Indies team. He is considered to be one of the best near- bowlers in the history of cricket. In 1987 he was named one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year .

Courtney Walsh played a total of 132 test matches for the West Indies. He scored a total of 519 wickets . Between 2000 and 2004 he held the record for the most test wicks scored. Walsh made his test debut in November 1984 against Australia in Perth. Walsh was an outspoken near-bowler specialist. His skills as a batsman , however, were not particularly well developed. His last appearance in a test for the West Indies team was against South Africa in his hometown of Kingston in April 2001. He made his debut in a one-day international match on January 10, 1985 against Sri Lanka . Walsh was not as successful with ODIs as he was with testing. In the 205 ODIs in which he participated, he achieved a total of 227 wickets. He also took part in three World Cricket Championships with the West Indies team ( 1987 , 1996 and 1999 ). Courtney Walsh's last appearance at an ODI was on January 11, 2000 against New Zealand in Christchurch.
