Matthäus von Rosthorn the Elder

Matthäus Rosthorn , since 1790 Edler von Rosthorn (* 1721 in Preston , Lancashire, England; † January 3, 1805 in Vienna ; also called the elder to distinguish it from his son and in England Matthew Rosthorn or Rowsthorne or Rawthorne ) was an English engineer who became the progenitor of the Austrian Rosthorn dynasty .

Life

The engineer Matthew Rosthorn, already known in Lancashire, moved to Austria in 1765 at the invitation of Empress Maria Theresa . He set up the first production facility for metal buttons in Vienna-Landstrasse , thus laying the foundation for a branched industrial empire. In 1792 a rolling mill for preproduction was built in Fahrafeld in Triestingtal .

Rosthorn was married three times (his first two wives died prematurely). His six sons in total were all successfully involved and involved in the various family businesses.

In 1790, Emperor Joseph II raised Matthäus Rosthorn to the hereditary nobility, which from then on could call himself Matthäus Edler von Rosthorn . He was the father of August von Rosthorn .
